— what we hold, and what we don't —

Privacy policy.

last updated · july 3, 2026

the short version: your writing is private by default, we collect as little as we can, we don't sell anything, and there are no ad trackers here. the longer version is below.

01what we hold

What we collect

  • your email — to sign you in and to reach you when we need to.
  • your name — only if you give it. it's optional, and you can leave it blank.
  • your writing — the words you make here, kept for you.
  • a little usage — basic, functional signals (like whether a page loaded, or when you last wrote) that keep the app working.

that's the list. we don't collect more just because we could.

02your writing

Your writing is private

we'll say it plainly: your writing is private by default. it's visible to you, and becomes visible to anyone else only when you deliberately choose to share it — into the reading room, or with nina. we don't read it for our own purposes, sell it, or use it to train any model.

if you write without an account, or offline, that draft is saved in your browser's local storage — on your device, not our servers — until you choose to sign in and keep it. clear your browser and it's gone; it never left your machine.

03payments

Payments, via Stripe

membership payments run through Stripe. when you pay, your card details go straight to Stripe — we never see or store your card number. we keep only what we need to know you're a member: that a subscription exists, its plan, and its status. Stripe holds the payment side under its own privacy policy.

04where it lives

Where your data lives

your account and your writing are stored in our database, hosted with Neon (a Postgres provider) on secure infrastructure. Stripe holds the payment records. these providers process data on our behalf, under their own safeguards.

we don't sell or rent your data to anyone, ever. we'd only ever hand something over if the law truly required it.

05cookies

Cookies & tracking

one cookie: the one that keeps you signed in. that's it. no advertising cookies, no third-party trackers, no selling your attention. any counts we keep of how the app is used are simple and private, tied to your account only so the practice works — never shared or sold.

06what you can do

Your control

your writing is yours to take, and yours to erase.

  • export — download your whole Vellum whenever you like.
  • delete — close your account anytime from your account page; we remove your writing and personal data. (we may keep minimal billing records where the law requires, and Stripe keeps its own.)
  • correct — update your email or name from your account.
  • ask — for anything else, write to us and a person will answer.
07who can be here

Age

portal poem is meant for grown people. you must be at least 18 to hold a paid Circle membership. the free writing practice is open from 16 up.

it isn't built for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data. if a child has signed up, write to us and we'll remove it.

08requests & changes

Requests, and changes to this policy

to see, export, correct, or delete your data — or to ask anything at all about privacy — write to hello@portalpoem.com and a person will answer.

if this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top, and for anything meaningful we'll tell members directly.
